Overview: The Kodiak is a large, fast-moving assault 'Mech that carries impressive medium-range firepower. Clan Ghost Bear technicians most likely designed it as the second-line equivalent to the popular Gladiator OmniMech, once again demonstrating the Ghost Bears' tendency to stick with the familiar. Trading the MASC and jump jets of the Gladiator for more armor and weaponry, the Kodiak has gained a fearsome reputation in the short time it has been in service. Capabilities: A devastating Ultra-20 Autocannon occupies the entire right side of its torso. Opposite the Autocannon is a pair of Streak SRM-6 launchers. Combined, these weapons provide ample close-in firepower but lack the ammunition to fight an extended battle. Because the 'Mech is intended for garrison use close to supply lines, its designers regarded this drawback as negligible. The diminutive ammunition load also reflects the Clan mode of war, in which the campaign is decided in a quick, decisive clash on a field of honor rather than in a slugging match dragged out over the course of weeks or months as I. S. battles often are.
Deployment: The Kodiak is believed to be unique to Clan Ghost Bear, though there has been a Kodiak operating with a Smoke Jaguar Binary. It is a relatively new design-Inner Sphere troops have thus far seen very few and encountered even fewer. Kodiaks among Provisional Garrison Clusters always serve as the command vehicle of assault Trinaries and Clusters. |

Though never observed in action, certain assumptions about the Kodiak's performance can be made solely on its weapon load. A devastating Ultra-20 Autocannon occupies the entire right side of its torso. Opposite the Autocanon is a pair of Streak SRM-6 launchers. Combined, these weapons provide ample close-in firepower but lack the ammunition to fight an extended battle. Designers probably disregarded this factor since the 'Mech is intended for garrison use close to supply lines. Above each hand is a claw-like array of four Extended-Range Medium Lasers, giving the Kodiak impressive hitting power even if it runs completely out of ammunition. Supplementing these weapons is a single ER Large Laser mounted in the torso directly beneath the engine. Likely added as an afterthought, this weapon gives the Kodiak a single shot at long range, but generates too much heat to be used once the enemy closes in. |

Chassis Summary: Able to carry massive amounts of firepower, deploy them quickly and reach normally inaccesible areas due to it's ability to carry Jump Jets. The Kodiak represents a highly capable Assault chassis with some unique characteristics. The lack of Omni slots is a design weakness, making optimization for different missions more challenging. It's heavy missile load also limits it's use to some degree and the Kodiak is mostly seen in a supporting, rather than a classic assault role. TACTICAL: The Kodiak's abilities to gain access to high ground makes it an extremely effective support mech, and has sufficient slots to configure it for almost any mission. With good speed for a 100 ton chassis, and overall performance similar to a Mad Cat MkII, it is capable of deploying a great deal of firepower to any area. The heavily armored center torso makes this mech extremely survivable, and as one of the few Assault mechs able to be configured with ECM, it can deploy with stealth, striking enemies from unexpected locations. It makes an outstanding support battlemech, able to engage enemies at long range, but also quite capable of defending itself should the need arise. Not particularly suited to close range brawls, the Kodiak excels when configured with long range weaponry. It's top speed is impressive, but will require a total of 28 tons worth of engine upgrades to achieve this speed, greatly limiting it's offensive potential. It is the only Clan mech without Omni slots, and this is consistent with Battletech standards, given that the Kodiak is a "second-line" mech and is assigned to pilots not rated for Omnimechs. Most of it's firepower is also carried in the arms, and removing them reduces the Kodiak's combat effectiveness considerably. While powerful, and worthy of the respect any 100 ton Assault chassis demands, it is a second line battlemech. In nearly every category, the Daishi is the better choice due to it's configuration flexibility. If Jump Jets are required, the 90 ton Highlander, with significantly better performance and also capable of carrying ECM, deserves serious consideration.
