He was raised in the overcrowded, under-resourced system of Sadurni IV's orphanages in the city of Cysa, learning from an early age how to fend for himself. At some point, he ran away from the orphanage and joined the ranks of the city's disaffected youth, drifting around its crime-ridden slums and backstreets. Jack's childhood was quickly defined by poverty and violence. Learning to fend for himself through countless scuffles and illicit dealings, by his late teens, Jack had carved out a reputation as a formidable fighter. He'd also developed an appetite for power, earning the moniker "Wicked" for his ruthless personality. At the age of 20, Jack Whitley enlisted in the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces, hoping to make a name for himself. However, his time in the military was short-lived, as his insubordinate attitude and disregard for authority quickly landed him in hot water. Discharged dishonorably after a series of disciplinary infractions, Whitley found himself adrift once again, seeking opportunities in a universe ripe with them. It was during this period of uncertainty that Jack fell into the world of mercenary work. Drawn to the promise of wealth and freedom, he took any jobs he could, even when they resulted in him fighting on both sides of a conflict. Over the years, he established himself as a cold, calculating, opportunistic gun for hire willing to do whatever it took to complete a contract and get paid. The approach seemed to work. By 3025, Whitley had amassed enough funds to forming his own mercenary outfit, a small, single-lance unit named Black Phalanx. As its commander, he continued to gain noteriety for his bloodthirsty efficiency and unrelenting pursuit of victory. But Jack's ambitions would ultimately prove to be his undoing. Though he'd spent most of his life punching above his weight and living to tell the tale, in 3028, Whitley attempted to muscle in on two separate artifact retrieval missions helmed by the Crayven Corporation. The first attempt, at Gan Singh, resulted in Black Phalanx's DropShip Kusanagi being rendered adrift in space, infected by William Kauffman and Alyssa Maxwell with a copy of the Locura virus. Undeterred, Captain Whitley attempted a direct military assault on the archaeological recovery, leading to the guns of the unit's TDR-5S Thunderbolt to the guns of the DropShip Half Moon. The second attempt, at Nirasaki, saw Jack Whitley leading his entire lance on an ill-fated attempt to usurp both Aegis Division and the Crayven Corporation in their attempt to recover priceless LosTech from the remains of an ancient WarShip. While Jack saw it as an opportunity to secure a lucrative payday at the expense of a rival mercenary unit and a major corporation, the operation quickly devolved into chaos as Black Phalanx found its single lance fighting a battle on three fronts against Aegis Division, the Crayven Corporation, and squatters who'd entrenched themselves deeply in the shipwreck. This grievious tactical error left Jack a man without a 'Mech or an employer. With his once-mighty mercenary outfit in ruins and his reputation tarnished, Jack spent several years trying to reclaim his lost glory and rebuild his shattered empire. Ultimately, in desperation, he applied for a role with Aegis Division, the very unit with whom he'd once shared a bitter rivalry and had been instrumental in his downfall. His desperation was evident on his application - a disgraced warrior, begging for scraps at the table of his adversaries. And, surprisingly, they took him in. Captain Charles Maxwell, enamored with the sweet taste of irony, decided to offer Jack a chance to start fresh as the rank of Private. Grudgingly, Jack accepted the offer and found himself once again in a position of power, albeit greatly diminished from his glory days. 2 Quote
