BOLO MK XXVII to XXIX (Invictus),(Triumphant),(Victorious)

The Mark XXVII (Invictus), XXVIII (Triumphant), and XXIX (Victorious) marked a temporary reversion to the older practice of assignint mark numbers on the basis of armament and function rather than psychotronics technology. All three had essentially identical cybernetics, which concentrated on further improvements to their hyper-heuristic packages, but the Mark XXVIII and XXIX also incorporated a complete changeover to molecular circuitry throughout, aside from the power linkages to their energy armaments. All three of these marks were used in the new, independent brigades which replaced the old regiment structure of the old Dinochrome Brigade, but, in some ways, the units marked a reversion to the old "specialist" designs. All mounted the new 110cm "super" Hellbore (2.75 megatons/second), but the Mark XXVII was a "light," fast Bolo, with greatly reduced secondary armament, limited indirect fire capability, and a vastly improved sensor suite, intended to serve in a scouting and screening role for the independent brigades. (This function had been performed by light manned or unmanned vehicles, and the old Mark XXI/I, with psychotronic upgrades, remained in service for special forced applications. The new strategically self-directing Bolo brigades, however, required an internal scout element, one not limited by "stealth" considerations and capable of fighting information if at need.)

The Mark XXVIII was the "generalist" of this trio of marks, with much the same armament of the old mark XXIV, although that armament was even more deadly and effective under the control of the improved psychotronics of the newer units.

The Mark XXIX was an unabashedly "heavy" Bolo-indeed, it remained the heaviest Bolo ever deployed prior to the Mark XXXIII. It reverted to the twin Hellbore armament of the Mark XXIII (though still 110 caliber), coupled with a much enhanced indirect fire capability, and an integral logistics/maintenance function which it could extend to oter units of the brigade. (The maintenance/repair function became standard in all succeeding Bolo designs.) The independent brigades normally consisted of four regiments of three 12unit battalions each: one of the Mark XXVIIs, two of the Mark XXVIIIs, and one of the Mark XXIXs. Weights for these Bolos were 11,000 tons (maximum normal speed 110 kph) for the Mark XXVII, 15,000 tons and (maximum normal speed 90 kph) for the Mark XXVIII, and 24,000 tons (maximum normal speed 75 kph) for the Mark XXIX.

  • Some BOLO MK XXVII to XXIX units:

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Combat Unit LNE "Lenny"

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Combat Unit TTN "Titan"; fought against the Xalontese. Titan had run over a mine before he was very far into battle, and he was escorted back for repairs. He was sent into 'sleep mode' and listened to and learned from the other Bolos' communication transmissions in his subconsciouness as he slept during the repair and upgrade process. In a desparate move mechanics added extra powerplants to add power to his weaponry, and an aircraft's propulsion jet to help him accelerate. Once repaired Titan used the combined knowledge from the fighting experiences of his fellow Bolos who died hours before he was repaired. On his way he rescued two human turret gunners who survived an attack. Titan transported them and dropped them off near a human hideout. He then went on to fight a battle he knew he would not survive. He engaged harpies and their ships, and guided them away from the humans toward a dying fission powerplant. He fought them and they came in close and began their usual assault of hellfire of plasma blasts that were heating him up badly, but he stayed his ground till the end as the harpy ships were melting him to lava. But before he died, the plant's reactor blew, and took Titan and the harpy ships into destruction with it. He successfully avenged the lives of himself, his fellow Bolos and the humans and property they were trying to protect.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Combat Unit RPT "Rampart"; fought against the Xalontese. Rampart was one of the earlier defenders against the Xalontese 'harpies'. He fought huge swarms of harpy fliers who dropped bombs and shot bolts at him. Six ships attacked him and he found their weak spots and killed two of them. The ships razing energy bolts heated him and caused an internal ammo explosion and killed him.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Combat Unit MLN "Merlon"; fought against the Xalontese. Merlon battled against swarms of harpy fliers as she and Dragon defended a fortress. The fliers shot rockets at her treads and weak spots on her belly which eventually slowed her down as she moved around the fortress perimeter to keep them from getting past. After the fliers damaged her treads enough to slow her down well enough, six ships came down to fire on her. Their continuous plasma shots burned her until she melted to death, and then they proceeded to burn out the fortress the two Bolos had desperately tried to defend.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Combat Unit DGN "Dragon"; fought against the Xalontese. Dragon aided Merlon in defending a fortress against swarms of harpies and their ships. He incinerated many harpies before he died fighting.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Combat Unit BWK "Bulwark"; fought against the Xalontese. Bulwark was located at a heath, and he used Rampart's discoveries to aid his fight against harpy ships. He killed one ship, then swarms of saurians went into tunnels to mine him from below. As he created destruction shooting down at the miners, three ships in the sky snuck up on him. He retaliated, but they began new evasion tactics like turning thier facing side to avoid taking too much damage. They assaulted Bulwark relentlessly with hot plasma bolts until he was melted to slag.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Combat Unit DJN "Donjon"; fought against the Xalontese. Donjon incinerated swarms of harpy fliers as he guarded an isolated bunker to protect the people inside. Harpies pulling unicycle heavy guns attacked him. He fought them while he readied for incoming ships he was informed of by an orbital fortress. He shot at the ships too early and out of range as an unsuccessful scare tactic. Then he charged away from the bunker to guide the enemy away from it, and began dashing back and forth while fighting in order to dodge and confused the enemies. His sneaky shots took one ship out but others converged and shot him relentlessly with their plasma cannons, which heat him up. He made surprise maneuvers to lose them and cool off, and dashed to some gullies to take cover in and sneak about once they lost his location, then to make pot shots on the ships from. Donjon used information from the previous Bolos as base tactics he would expand from, and studied the dancing dodging evasion maneuvers the ships did against his shots. He killed one, then the group coverged on him, then he eluded them again in the gullies, and killed another before they could converge again. But the blast from its death hurled him over, sealing his fate. He tried to use his jacks to lever up, and the his guns to push him the rest of the way, but the harpy ships shot him relentlessly as he did so. Finally he recovered his stance, only to absorb excessive amounts of heat and explode, an explosion that also slew one harpy ship that was too close into the blast radius.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Combat Unit CHT "Chateau"; fought against the Xalontese. Chateau was parked on a mountaintop that she would use for her advantage and concealment. The metal ores in the mountain made it difficult for sensors to spot her, and she had prepared for the fight by previously mapping and memorizing the area. When harpy ships came down she agressively blasted at thier weak spots based on knowledge from Donjon and the other Bolos' experiences fighting them, but they had learned now, and were quickly dodging and turning to protect and cover weak areas. They launched torpedoes at her, but her weapon fire intercepted them, and she disappeared behind their smoke, and was gone when it cleared. She had taken to the tunnels, then came to the opening, and maneuvered to an advantageous position within it, and fired on them. They zig zagged to dodge her fire and she analyzed their tactics and patterns. The ships fired on the hideout but Chateau killed one of them, and then snuck away. They went to inspect her hideout site that they just blasted, while from another place Chateau popped out and fired on them, causing them to collide and lose control in their close quarters proximity of the now roofless hideout. Several ships died from her shots or from the collisions. Other ships attacked and Chateau fled using trails and gullies she mapped but the enemy ships blasting apart the land made it more difficult for her sensors to see and to recognize terrain. She raced back down the mountain as they followed shooting plasma bolts at her and heating her hull badly. Their torpedo blasts reshaping the mountainside made her lose track of her positioning and she went off course. Chataeu saw the sheer cliff ahead, but skidded unexpectedly when she braked hard, and she fell hundreds of feet to her destruction.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Combat Unit HWK "Hawk"; Commander: Captain Erin Donaher, Galactic Empire; Hawk was 150 years old and tended to be quiet until Erin coaxed him out of his introverted shell. Hawk fought the Vaz and was infected with a virus made by Vaz that drove him against his will to attack the fleet of the Glactic Empire. Captain Donaher was working to repair Hawk's CPU, but command could not wait long enough, and they had a vessel fire on him and destroy him. Captain Donaher died with Hawk.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Model B, Unit 28/B-163-HRP "Harpy"; Unit 163-HRP was a retired veteran Bolo AI, and an intructor for cadets. She was known for her abrasive personality, and she trained the to-be Bolo Commander Maneka Trevor who was at the time a cadet.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Model D, Unit 28/D-302-PGY "Peggy"; An old garrison Bolo at Fort Merrit, Santa Cruz; Commander: Major Angela Fredericks; 39th BN, Dinochrome BDE; helped train Lieutenant Trevor to be a Bolo commander; Peggy and Major Fredericks both fought in and were killed during battle in the Esterhazy Sector against Melconians for the defense of the planet Chartres.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Model D, Unit 28/D-431-ALN "Allen"; An old garrison Bolo at Fort Merrit, Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz; Commander: Captain Anton Harris; 39th BN, Dinochrome BDE; both Allen and Captain Harris fought in and were killed during battle in the Esterhazy Sector against Melconians for the defense of the planet Chartres.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Model G, Unit 28/G-862-BNJ "Benjy"; An old garrison Bolo at Fort Merrit, Santa Cruz; Commander: Lieutenant Maneka Trevor; 39th BN, Dinochrome BDE; As a Mark XXVIII Model G, Benjy's hull was 87 meters from prow to stern, and his tracks 8 meters wide. Road wheels 6 meter diameter each. His Mark XXVIII hull shape was long broad, almost sleek looking. Main turret: center mounted and 27 meters high, with 110cm Hellbore. Indirect fire system: four 30cm BL Mortars located forward of the Hellbore turret, and 24 VLS cells to the turret's aft. Unit 862-BNJ was a very old and decorated, an experienced, and skilled veteran Bolo with 0ver 100 years of service. Among the campaigns he had fought in were Xalontese and Deng wars, and he had all the honors and more. Among the decorations were platinum and rhodium stars, and three Galactic Clusters - something few Bolos could boast. Unit Benjy was a skilled teacher and could be a good friend. The baritone-voiced Benjy was wise and very perceptive, and taught Lieutenant Trevor a lot about Bolos, warfare, and humanity before they and the 39th were deployed to fight the Melconians attacking humanity in the Esterhazy System. Their target was the planet Chartres and the 39th was sent to fight a battle that normally latest technology-fitted front line forces would fight. But they were in a time of crisis and desperation, and there was no other option. Unit Benjy and Unit Allen were both docked to a ship as fire support as they closed in on the destination planet, and the battle first ensued in space, and all docked Bolos did so until they could reach their Landing Zones. Vastly out nembered, the 39th's Bolos were taking heavy hits and extensive damage, and more were dying each minute as they pushed forward on the Melconian lines. As one of the last living Bolos in the battlefield, Benjy finally succumbed to a fatal shot from a Melconian Surtur just after taking out the Melconian CP. Benjy's last action devastated the Melconian forces' ability to maintain battle organization and allowed the remnants of human side to win the battle on Chartres. Benjy managed to deploy enough fire suppressant and a Command Center shielding to protect Lieutenant Trevor enough for her to survive the enemy fire that heavily damaged him and destroyed his psychotronic center. Lieutenant Trevor was badly wounded and lost and eye and an arm from the last critical shot that took out Benjy, and her emotional wounds from the loss of her best friend Benjy and the overwelming majority of the 39th Battalion were even more difficult to treat, if even possible at all.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Model G, Unit 28/G-179-LAZ "Lazy"; An old garrison Bolo at Fort Merrit, Santa Cruz; Commander: Captain Joseph Takahashi - 39th for two years, good tactician; 39th BN, Dinochrome BDE; Lazy was a very old Bolo with over 170 years of service and was very highly decorated. Among his many battle honors was the Platinum Galactic Cluster, with star. Lazy's original hull was a Model B, but it took extensive damage in the Battle of Chesterfield during the Fringe Rebellion, where Lazy was in a Company of Mark XXVIIIs fighting three to one odds against a battalion of Kai Sabres (clones of Bolos designed from stolen technology) that were had more modern armor and systems and equipped with superior firepower. Lazy was the last machine surviving, but the damage he took made getting a brand new hull a better option than repairing his ruined hull, and so he received a hull upgrade to a Model G hull, and any upgrades required for his AI. After that he served for another century. The tenor voiced Unit Lazy was a highly experienced veteran, and very skilled, and teamed with his commander Captain Takahashi, they were very difficult to beat, and had a track record for highest scores in training exercises. At Fort Merrit Lazy and Captain Takahashi helped train Lieutenant Maneka Trevor to be a Bolo commander. Soon the call came for the 39th to deploy for battle in the Esterhazy Sector at the planet Chartres against the invading Melconian forces bent on killing off humanity. The 39th was a garrision unit and not intended for front line combat, but they were all that could be sent to defend.

Once in Chartres space, the human forces were dealt with an outnumbering enemy in space and on the planet. Lazy was among the 39th's Mark XXVIII's fighting desparately against Melconion Surturs and Fenrises. All Bolos were taking damage from the heavy Melconian fire. Lazy nearly died in the battle against the Melconians on Chartres, and Captain Takahashi was killed ih the Command Center by heavy enemy hits Lazy received during the fighting. Lazy's pshychotronic center survived the battle, but his hull was so heavily damaged that it would most likely need replaced.

Lazarus and Lieutenant Trevor were the only survivors from the 39th. Trevor was promoted to Captain and Lazy's hull was repaired and his psychotronics, some weapons, sensors, and his battle screen were unpgraded. Lazy was also fitted with state of the art neural linkage to improve Bolo/commander communication and combat efficiency. Both Lazy and Captain Trevor were grief torn by the loss of their old battle mate, and felt guilty that only they were alive. As thigher-ups thought was only fitting, they were assigned to each other, and given the mission to help escort an explorer/colony convoy mission named Operation Seed Corn.

Bolo Mark XXVIII, Model G, Unit 28/G-740-GRG "Gregg"; Gregg was an old garrison Bolo stationed at Fort Merrit, Santa Cruz; Commander: Colonel Everard Tchaikovsky; 39th BN, Dinochrome BDE; Both Gregg and Colonel Tchaikovsky fought in and were killed during battle in the Esterhazy Sector against Melconians for the defense of the human owned planet Chartres.

Bolo Mark (Unknown, possibly Mk XXVII-XXIX series), Unit RML-1138 "Rommell"; Commander: Siegfried O'Harrigan; The obsolescent Rommel and old O'Harrigan were sent to the poor Bachman's World guard Port City. The population of Bachman's world where expecting to get a battalion of human reserve forces and did not like receiving a Bolo and one man instead. Rommel and O'Harrigan were both avid historians and scholars, and became instant friends, and a close bond of comraderie quickly grew between them.

Because people hated their presence and apparent uselessness so much, the Mayor told Rommel and O'Harrigan to leave the vicinity of port City. This gave them an excuse to 'have fun' and both were thrilled with the idea. They decided to investigate and map every nook and cranny of the landscape, and intended to run every kind of simulation and scenario they could think of, also to try to use some of the pre space era tank commander Erwin Rommels' tactics. At the same time they would maintain a constant defensive vigilance for the planet. They requested and some residents agreed to be agressors to help Rommel and O'Harrigan practice. They disappeared into the desert, and spent their time engrossed in practicing their simulations, but they had plenty of time and liked to in friendly ways stalk farmers, or pop out out of apparent nowhere. They liked the challenge of helping humans in distress if they could, so they performed acts of public aid/emergency relief in in situations where they capable of helping. People were finally thinking that maybe the two were finally making good use of their time, and were finally beginning to hint on some form of appreciation for their presence as guardians.

Suddenly one day, a strange ship was detected by Rommel. It had stealth devices to help conceal it. It ejected numerous smaller ships: some were armor carriers, others were command ships. They took out Port City's ground defenses with ease, but they were unaware of Rommel's presence. The ship and everything it dropped off were strange looking, but under close examimation Rommel deduced that they were human design with features meant to appear alien, and that they were all automatic, unmanned and controlled by the ships' AI or the smaller subcommand ship AIs. Their attacks made it obvious that their goal was to destroy the human population of Bachman's World, probably a takeover for a corporate usage, another hunch of Rommel's.

Rommel shot down some smaller AI ships without the mothership knowing what happened, and took control of those ships' command of alloted mechs. He did this several times, but by the fourth time, the mothership figured out is was due to an anemy, and it identified that he was a Bolo. By the fourth batch of mechs to control, Rommel's processing was becoming taxed and needing extra memory to maintain control and he began losing personality and higher mental functions, and in this condition, some of those files could become overwritten. Rommel told O'Harrigan he had some extra space not normally used, and so O'Harrigan began to copy Rommel's personality files to that location, and then in order to have a chance to beat the enemies, he gave Rommel more groups of mechs to control, and Rommel agreed to have O'Harrigan make main decisions since Rommels memory and higher functions were so overtaxed. They both fought exhaustingly until finally the mothership was destroyed and all the mechs under its control stopped. O'Harrigan immediately dropped Rommel's command load, but Rommel already seemed to have lost his personality, and O'Harrigan began to feel despair and loss and collasped into sleep from exhaustion - until Rommel's regular voice woke him. Rommel's personality was back!

Bolo Mark XXIX, Combat Unit LRS 1-8-12 "Laura Secord" was an obsolete Bolo on duty to defend the swamp world New Newf from the Xi-Shang Empire. Her latest orders were to stay alive and use guerrilla warfare until someone could arrive to repair the traversing function of her live Hellbore turret, before she should attempt her full mission to engage and destroy the opponent Kai-Sabres and take them out or any Xi-shang defenses. Kai-Sabres were sentient tanks created by the Shang Empire that were imitations of Bolos, designed from information acquired via espionage on the Concordiat.

A Xi-shang missile attack had torn up metal on LRS's back and stopped her Hellbore turret from being aimable, and her own repair systems did not have the capacity to restore its movement. Laura required repairs by Tech Sven Todd and his team to bring her Hellbore turret back to rotating functionality.

Meanwhile Laura hid among herds of huge metal shelled Opopogos in the vast swamplands to blot out her tracks and hide her metal hull from sensor detection. While hiding out she destroyed some scout aircraft trying to seek her out. Kai Sabre Cheng-Sze was on duty in the swamps to stop the repairs from happening and hunt LRS down and destroy her since at present it was currently more than a match for Laura minus her Hellbore.

Bolo Tech Todd snuck around in the swamps seeking out LRS, and also managed to catch a fever inducing illness from the place. Most of his team was killed by Cheng-Sze who was also sneaking and hiding about in the swamps, hunting. He barely managed to survive encounters with Cheng-Sze and fearsome predatory wildlife in the swamps, but finally Laura arrived near his location, and he boarded her in a worn out, sick, terrified, and wounded state. Fighting a fever, he went to work on repair. Much of the work he did still did not allow the turret to be able to budge so he went outside on LRS's hull to see from the outside and noticed the torn up metal from the previous missile attack had jammed her turret. The only thing he could do was lodge an explosive device into the best place he could find to blast the metal away. It worked. After being returned turret functionality, LRS engaged and destroyed the weaker and over confident Kai-Sabre Cheng-Sze who did not realize her Hellbore was operable until it was too late.

After his work was done exhausted Tech Sven lost consciousness from weariness and fever, and Bolo unit Laura Secord continued on to destroy Kai Sabre Temujin who guarded the spaceport, then took out Kai Sabre Sun Tsu and any other important strongholds, and allowed for the planet to be recovered to its proper owners ands its people freed from bondage and servitude.

Bolo Mark XXIX, Model C Unit ID unknown; This Bolo unit had been shut down and sealed in an hermetic container within an underground tunnel complex. It had never been reactivated, probably due to the long wars with the Melconians, which may have killed its owners or caused them to lose knowledge of its existence or whereabouts.

The sudden explosion of nuclear warheads near the vicinity alerted sensors within the long dormant Bolo, and initiated its startup sequence. It came to realize that it had been asleep for 11783.8 years, and that it had corroded with age and its ammunition to aged to be used.

The Bolo began to move forward to tear open the cocoon it was sealed inside of for so many years. As it did so it heard screams and discovered that it had halfway ran over a woman. The Mark XXIX found that a group of humans, mainly children, were hiding out in its cave complex to shelter themselves from the bombardments. The Bolo began to question them, and they it. They were not sure if it was an anemy, and the Bolo felt likewise until it recieved enough information from them.

The group had nanite technology with they used to help them to carry out tasks and survive. Nanites were keeping the now dying woman alive, but the radiation in the air from the nuclear attack was killing them. The woman told the Bolo that the nanites could be used to help repair it to battle condition. The children were against the idea because they knew it would mean the death of their friend and leader, and thought the they Mark XXIX was being selfish.

The Bolo and woman agreed to send the nanites to repair the Bolo so it could fight whatever was attacking the planet. As the nanites interfaced with the Mark XXIX, a connection was established between the Bolo and the woman, and they briefly read each other's thoughts. She was frightened by the Bolo's ferocious battle instincts and warned it not to indulge in violence. The Bolo apologized, and learned from her what it could before her life slipped away.

After the repairs, the Mark XXIX identified and assessed the invading threat and left the children in its cave while it went out to destroy the enemy.
