Garrett Garland asks:
Charles Maxwell responds:
. . . Charles is a little harder to explain. Answering your question also requires that I explain the origins of his son, Benjamin.
In 2002 - 2003, Gen Miyamoto and I were very active on MechWarrior 4 Online. Together, we formed a group called Crayven Securities, Incorporated, and literally functioned as 'guns for hire' for whatever team happened to be losing at the moment we dropped into the match. Gen's Thor and my Daishi quickly became infamous figures on the Zone.
When I signed into the Zone for the first time, I was prompted to enter a username. I happened to be watching the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode entitled 'The Wounded' at the time, and just arbitrarily plugged in 'Benjamin Maxwell' (the rouge Captain the episode centers around, played by Bob Gunton) as my username. And so it began.
Subsequently, when Crayven Securities was formed, Gen and I decided to create dossiers for our online personas. A background was fleshed out for Benjamin that had him becoming the CEO of Crayven Corp with Gen taking a position as SWORD director. Benjamin's parents were listed as 'Charles and Alyssa Maxwell,' but no details were ever written concerning their backgrounds. Also, at that time, the image of Bob Gunton was used to represent Benjamin.
By the time the Legionnaires RPG was established, 'Benjamin Maxwell' had been the name I'd been using for my MW-related online activities for two years - so to use the persona was the natural choice for me. The problem was, the setting, storyline, and background required of Ben for the RPG wasn't compatible with his background on MW4Online, to say nothing of the fact that the image ultimately cultivated to represent him (as a jab at The Village Idiot, who in a 'l33t' post, described Ben as looking like David Caruso) didn't look at all like Bob Gunton. So a decision was made to ignore the Maxwell that had existed on MW4Online, and instead, modify the character to fit the paramters of the Ben everyone knows today. The 'other' Maxwell and the huge backstory involving the exploits of the Crayven Corporation lay dormant and shelved, until Operation: Pyre Light (I believe) when I realized that the whole conundrum with Ben's dual existences could be solved very neatly - by introducing a character which, up until that point, had existed only as a passing reference in Ben's dossier. Charles Maxwell was brought to life, replacing 'Benjamin' as the character that had been the head of Crayven (easy enough to do, as MW4Online Maxwell was never referred to by his first name - only as 'G.C.I. Maxwell') and the background of the character was retconned into the canon of the RPG - merging the two parallels into one. I'm actually quite pleased that things worked out as they did - both characters are a joy to play.
This also explains why the avatars are flip-flopped.

You want to kill him...it would give you GREAT PLEASURE to kill him...feel your weapon...you like the feel...it is power...use it...USE YOUR POWER...
I want to kill him...
Yes...you have a GREAT DESIRE to kill him.
I charge ddown the hallway toward Captain Maxwell and corporal eisenfaust as they stood down there talking. Captain Maxwell turned toward me and started to say something but he didnt have the chance as I jumped on him and knocked him on the floor his head banging against the tiles and red blood trickled from the back of his skull which mixed with his red hair and blue eyes which made him look a lot like david caruso. I pulled my Bushido blade out of its sheath and held it over his neck.
"once this sword comes from its sheath it must spill blood before it goes back! I MUST COMPLETE MY MISSION!"
i slammed the sword forward and almost got it in his neck but he grabbed my arm and twisted it and I wound up slicing his arm instead. he kicked me in the stomach and i went backwards and pulled out my shruikens and started thworing them at him he got up and came at me but my adrenalin cancelld out my pain and I threw him backwards into the glass case up against the wall he went downa nd I swung the sword at him - I missed again and busted the sword on the wall. This made me madder and I jumped on top of hium and started strangling him with my bear hands.
