Here's the thing guys, I don't know how many, or who the posters are, but it'd be nice if you guys would chill out with the rape and various other stuff in the Dreams of Avarice. I know it's 'character' development, and you want to portray the Word of Blake as monsters and such, but perhaps lay off it for a bit. If I were a new member as of right now, what I'd see at this site is some weird domination stuff going down, and just hella darkness in general. I'm just thinking that this site has not yet established itself well enough because at the moment a new member will consider these things the norm, perhaps you can bring up such things rarely after the site has established itself as less extreme. As you know, I've read many battletech novels and such, and these things are, for the most part, absent in them. Perhaps I just have an incorrect view of the site, but I'm just letting you know how it looks to me right now.
We didn't mean to push the envelope. It's actually done now, the backstory that is. From here on out it's all plot related. Those writing from the Blakist perspective just wanted to make sure that some people were seeing what exactly was going on - because people snapping and joining the Word of Blake isn't something they do without a reason.

If I may, however - what "various other stuff" are you referring to?

Any posts perceived as offensive can be easily modified - however I will say that as Charles and his gang go - it is important to establish how far he's willing to go to bring about new development in the art of warfare. I'm reluctant to let the Saburo / Ron Harris angles drop.

Let me know.
I'll be honest, I haven't been keeping really up to date with the Dreams of Averice thread, just briefly skimming through the new posts and mostly reading what the characters actually say not so much the action stuff.

As such I haven't really noticed much of the offensive stuff that Garland mentioned, although I do have to agree with him on the point that new comers to the site may see that think its the norm or something. Then again at the same time I agree with Ben that its important to get the proper backstory written up in order to truly portray the characters in the right light.

Personally Charles has gone from a rather harmless old man that just ran a business into a semi sociopath that is willing to do just about anything to further his company's power and abilities. (which is good really, he's gone from a somewhat shallow character without much of a background, into a much deeper and more fully developed character now, even if he is a little twisted in ways lol)

I definately like the Ron Harris angle that has been developing, it really allows a great backstory leading into the reintroduction of some old characters and gives us the beginnings of an extensive OP for the near future.

I really appreciate your comments - particularly in regard to Charles. I wanted to show him as a bit twisted - while not actually being evil. I do realize that at the moment, he's walking a very thin line, but that's the nature of the character. As Gen so aptly put it on the old site, "...he'd serve Terra on a silver platter to the Clans for the right price, but then again, here he is on Sheratan burning money to keep a broken merc outfit afloat. This whole damn jihad's made everything crazy."

At day's end - Charles remains a good guy, even if his methods are...questionable.

My biggest problem I'm currently running into is how to reinstate Ben. When he was temporarily written out, the way in which it was done left my trying to figure out how best to return him to the unit. Any suggestions anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.

I may have an idea, check War Room B for details. ph34r.gif
I realized that my last post didn't explain Charles too well. So a little more on the enigmatic section chief, who became an unwitting heir to the Crayven Corporation's throne following the destruction of its corporate headquarters by the Word of Blake in 3068.

Basically, Charles has two priorities - the first being keeping the company that he became the unwitting heir to the throne of afloat - and the second being the general well-being of the Inner Sphere as a whole. The latter comes more out of his ongoing desire to keep some semblance of order in the world that Benjamin, his only son, and lone surviving family member, lives in, as well as from the few remaining shreds of humanity that the corporate world hasn't stripped away from him.

By the same token, Charles doesn't give a damn about politics - he believes that the whole system is corrupt and broken - and as such, the individuals with whom he associates are only those able to make the best deals.

Yes, even the Clans are just another customer to him.

He's been unwittingly tasked with keeping the fragments of a once-great corporation alive - the title of 'Chairman and CEO' was unceremoneously dropped in his lap mid 3068 when the Word of Blake wiped out Vesta 3 - and he's become obsessed with this burden.

Unfortunately, at least for the moment, he's now got a tiny amount of resources with which to carry this responsibility out. To that end, he's thrown the 'rule-book' out the window as to what is and isn't considered 'acceptable' business practice, while staying within what he believes the 'spirit' of the company to be. This was most recently demonstrated through his coversation with Schultz concerning the justifiable deaths of two technicians.

He's gotten WAY too into the R&D aspect of the company, and spends the bulk of his time in the makehift laboaratories aboard the Dreams of Avarice, planning, overseeing, and helping to execute various projects that will benefit the Corporation, and, in some cases, the Inner Sphere as well. His latest project, involving Saburo, has started off disasterously, but Charles hopes that with time and perserverance, the experiment will ultimately work out well.

He cares greatly about the Legionnaires - and will go to great lengths to help them by whatever means he is able. His collection of fine cigars is outclassed only by his personal weapons collection, which he maintains at his estate in the Free Republic of Quebec, on Terra.

Hi guys. Well I'm afraid it was my fault that Garland was bringing up the things in The Dreams of Averice Thread. It did not have anything to do with Charles, Saburo, or Ron's posts. It was the treatment of the girl in Marcus's post in the thread. I'm really sorry, I happen to mention to him that it disturbed me. That I wished he didn't have to get so grafic. I'm sorry if I upset anyone. Thanks Matthew for trying to fix things, I appreciate your concern. I didn't mean to step on anyones creativity.
I think the sex slave stuff is going too far... girls chained to beds and such. I wasn't really referring to Charles or Saburo, mostly to the other posts within that thread. They are, in my opinion, inappropriate for the site. Then again, I'm not the policy maker here. The poster may consider this character development, and perhaps it is, but I think they should find a better premise for that development.

The writers involved in this have apologized for the darker style of storytelling, and again emphasize that they simply didn't want to allude too much and leave things to someone's imagination. The desire was to make sure that some of the dark, foreboding things came out openly. All opinons have been noted and accepted, and now that we know what everyone's limits are, we can all work to make sure that the lines of 'decency' will not be crossed again. I will ensure that everyone adheres to a stricter code of ethics when posting from here on out.

However, what I will NOT do is strike the posts that are already in place. A lot of effort went into them by the parties involved, and I do not believe it would be fair to their authors to remove works that were crafted in good faith.

Let's put this behind us and move on.
I apologize for my post in the Dreams of Avarice thread. It was not intended to offend anyone and more importantly, not intended to give the site a bad reputation. By my own discretion and some careful consideration, I have deleted the offending post and posted a replacement. A post that I am more satisfied with the outcome overall, and one that should be much less offensive. The backstory I am trying to convey was not intended to come out the way it did, but this one should tell the same story the way it was to be told.
