Prologue

September 13, 2352
Just out of Earth's orbit

Savior rocketed forward, her fusion engines being pushed to the limit. "Thorn, we have three UGG Battlecruisers after us." Alex leaned forward as he studied the readouts. "There is no way we can outrun them!" The voice carried through the cockpit. Alex ran to Garrett. "Listen Garland, I dont care how you do it just get us out of this mess. Make a blind jump if you have to." Garrett glared back with an intensity Alex had rarely seen. "Are you crazy? You know how dangerous blind jumps are!" He accented his point by banking the large cruiser to the left. A large yellow streak flew by. Crack called from the tech chair. "Sir, we have a fourth battlecruiser coming in to block us." Alex rubbed his chin. He was a soldier, not a ship captain. "Punch it." "What!?" Garland retorted. "You know we cant survive firepower like that. Do it Garland." Garrett turned and punched the button to his left. The stars and battlecruiser in the viewpoert distorted. Soon there was a void in space where the ship had just been.

Chapter 1

June 3, 2352
United Global Government Headquaters, New Dallas, North America

A large man with short brown hair, sharp blue eyes, and a well build body strode down a corridor. A large tatto was visible along two thirds of his right arm. The tattoo dipicted a falcon who's wings closed in around a symbol of a skull with two swords behind it. A smaller, yet equally built man followed the first taller man. This man also had the same tatto as the larger man. After making several tunrs down white-washed halls they reached a door with the words "General Williams" on it. The first man knocked and opened the door. As both men stepped in a grey haired man turned in his black leather chair to face them. "Ah, gentlemen. Please have a seat." He pointed tot he two chairs on the otherside of his mahagony desk. The older man looked to the taller of the two guests. "Alex Thorn. Good to see you." He slowly looked to the smaller man. "You too, Garrett." Both men stayed silent. The general leaned forward, bony yet strong hands gripping the edge of the desk. "I'll cut to the chase. The UGG is getting frustrated with the Leage of Free Worlds. This war has been going on for three years now with no signs of their being a peace treaty. As you gentlemen know the LFW is getting braver and stronger. You also know they have taken multitudes of prisoners, both civilian and military."

Alex cut the man short as he drew a breath. "Sorry sir, but what is your point?" The general smiled, his high cheeks and deep brown eyes coming alive. "Well we have reports that those prisoners are alive. We dont know exactly where, but they are alive." He stopped for a moment and stood. He then slowly strolled to the window ht overlooked the busy streets below. "This is where you two come in." He turned and looked at them over his sharp nose. "The UGG wants both of you to lead a small group of slodiers behind enemy lines and rescue those prisoners." Garrett stared at the ceiling as he grunted. Alex lowered his head and sighed. "With all due respect sir, we are both retired." The older man, rushed with excitement. "Thats exactly why we want you to lead this operation." He walked back to the desk and picked up a piece of paper which he handed to Alex. "This is a list of potential members of the group. you get to chose who you take with you, but the UGG wants you to chose from that list."

Alex looked over the list with a practice eye. Some of the names he recongnized, others he did not. One thing was common with all of the names though. They all had big, bold letters that read 'RETIRED' next to them. Alex slowly looked up. "Sir all of these men are retired." The general nodded in aggrement. "Exactly. We want the LFW to think you are defecting to their side. Being retired helps your arguement." Alex sighed and looked at Garrett who was looking over the list. Garrett nodded silently as Alex spoke. "Alright. We will do it." The general's grin grew wide and his eyes grew bright. "Excellent." He shook their hands as they stood. "Good luck to both of you." Garrett and Alex quickly walked out of the office without saying a word.

A fantastic start! Your narrative style is quite immersive and I look forward to reading more!

By the way, is the LFW in any way related to the FWL?
Actually not really. Only after I started did I find out about the FWL.
Sorry that was my as a guest. Heh. Ill have the second part of chapter 1 up hopefully by tomorrow.

Great stuff Alex, cant wait to see more!
(Continued from Chapter 1)

A smallish man stepped up to the general as they watched Alex and Garrett step into the street below. "Does he know?" The man asked quietly. "No," the general replied as he stepped from the window and pressed a button on his desk. A calm female voice replied, "Yes general?" General Williams calmly and cooly replied. "Have someone watche them." He looked up to the man, with a stern voice. "We can only hope he leads us to our target."

Once outside Garrett turned to Alex. "So what do you think?" Alex ignored him for a moment as he tossed the list in a nearby trashcan. "Well Garland we wont be needing this." A smile crept along Garrett's face as he got Alex's idea. "You must be thinking what I'm thinking." Alex turned to the man and smiled mischeviously. "Yes Garrett. You are." Their pace quickened as Alex formulated a plan in his head. "I need you to compromise a list of all the retired Falcons. I have a few in mind, but lets see who else we can find." He stopped, searched the street, and lowered his voice. "Meet me in the usual spot." Garrett nodded and jogged off, leaving Alex to himself for a few moments.

Garrett edged around a corner into a dark alley, his breath heavy. Garrett turned to the man that was hunched down in front of him. "Come on Crack. We dont have much more time." The man looked at Garrett with a glare that sent chills down his spine. Bobby 'Crack' Williams was the best tech and security hacker Garrett knew. Crack had gotten his nickname from his uncanny skill in getting into most secure places, along with his old addiction to the drug. Garrett decided to give the man his space. As Garrett looked back to the street a hiss came. Crack stood up with a smile on his face. Garrett slipped through the door with Crack close behind. A dim light hung above rows and rows of filing cabinets. At the end of each row there was a cumpter. Crack instantly headed for the closest computer. Once Garrett caught up to Crack, the man was already pulling up the files for the other Falcons. Garrett smiled as Crack scrolled through the list. "Alright. Print that off and lets get to Thorn." Crack did so, and they headed for the door. As they reached the door the lights flared on, and a voice called out to them. "Hey! Stop. This is government property." Both men bolted out the door and into the alley. After a few turns they jumped into a waiting hovercar and merged into the traffic.

Alex bumped up and down as he drove over the gravel and dirt road. He was greatful that his now ancient Xterra could take such punishment. After several miles of pothole filled road he came to a ver large house. He pulled into the small driveway and cut the engine. After ringing the doorbell a beautiful woman came to the door. "Hey Madison!" The woman hugged Alex as she recognized who addressed her. "Alex! Good to see you." The woman invited Alex in and offered him a drink. Alex calmly declined and looked about. "Is Ron home?" Madison nodded and swiftly left the room. After a few moments she returned with a large, barrel chested man in tow. The two men smiled widely as they shook hands. "Alex glad to see you." Alex nodded. "You too Ron." He then looked at Madison. "Can we talk?" Ron nodded silently and headed for an office room. After entering Ron closed the door. "What's on your mind Alex? Its not like you to come out here for no reason." Alex sighed as he examined Ron's medals from the war. "Ron, I've been given a mission and I need to form a squad and I want you in on it." Alex turned to face the man. Ron shook his head sternly. "I cant." Alex glared intensely at the man. "I need you on this one Ron." "Alex! You know I cant. I cant leave Madison and Micheal." He motioned to the door, thinking of his wife and son. "And how do you think I feel Ron?" Alex quickly replied, hurt filling his voice. Ron lowered his head and nodded. The room fell silent for a few moments before Ron spoke up. "Alright. I'll do it. What's the mission?" Alex smiled. "Alright. Ill explain later. First we need to get with the other guys." They both then headed out the door, after Ron said goodbye and headed for Alex's meeting spot.

Twenty minutes later Alex and Ron pulled up to an old abandoned shack. The Falcons had found it during a "war game" and used it as a meeting place. Both men walked into the shack to find Garrett and Bobby hunched over several papers. Garrett looked up first and nodded. Both men returned the nod. He picked up several pieces of paper and handed them to Alex as he took a seat. Ron chose to stand in a corner. "Here is a list of all retired Falcons. Old and new." Alex nodded as he studied the list. "Excellent job you two." Alex then set the list down and reexplained the operation for Ron and Bobby's sake. Once questions were answered the four squad members set to work on finding the right men for the mission.

(Continued from last post)

The men spent several minutes scowring through papers of dossiers and other files. Bobby was the first to speak up. "What about Harrison?" "No. He's too jumpy, and definately too loud." Ron nodded in agreement with Garrett. After another moment of silence Ron spoke up. "How about this Will Cager? Most people just call him Cager, but he was with the Falcons after you guys left. Excellent shot, but even better with demolitions." Ron handed Alex the paper he was looking at. Alex looked at the profile and his past successes. Ron was right about being an excellent demolitions man. "Alright, he is in." There was another long bout of silence. Then a name came to Alex. "Hmm. What about Ben Maxwell?" The others looked at him with quizical looks and Alex chuckled. "Most of you probably never knew him. He was the Flacon's only sniper. Extemely deadly. Very funny guy once you got to know him." The others looked at each other and nodded with approval, trusting in their leader's insight.

Alex set his list down and then leaned back in his chair. "Alright gentlemen I think we have enough members for this mission. Crack, you and Ron work on getting a hold of Cager. Garret, you and I will pay Ben a visit." The others smiled and nodded. Alex checked his watch and set his chair down. "Meet back here in four hours." The others checked their watches and headed out.

Four hours later the entire squad was seated in the abandoned shack. After all of the men had settled down Alex stood and paced the room. "Alright men listen closely because I am only going over this once. The UGG has hired us on a highly dangerous mission. We will be piloting a light cruiser. Although normally bulky this cruiser has been majorly refitted." Alex pressed a button on a small project he had brought to the shack. The holoprojector came to life with the blue outline of a ship. "This is the ship Savior. She has majorly stripped armor, and has had most of her armament stripped off. All of this was done for manuverability. She is almost as manuverable as the UGG's largest fighter, and is also the fastest cruiser in the fleet." This drew several low whistles from the guys, but Alex continued, not letting the whistles distract him. "Now the UGG wants us to fly into LFW sanctioned space and 'defect' to their side. Once we have succeded at that we are to find the camp the prisoners are held in and rescue them. We are also asked to find as much intelligence on anything that could be useful to the UGG in defeating the LFW. Now are there any questions?" Cager was the first to raise a hand. "Sir is there any defense on this ship?" Alex nodded. "Yes the Savior does have a newly installed ECM suite and a new Mytock Archer Missle system, but we have limited rockets to use." Cager nodded, as Ron raised his hand. "How many prisoners can we put on a light cruiser. It doesnt seem logical to send a small ship for this kind of mission." Alex brought an inside schematic of the ship on the holoprojector. "As you can see here extra space was made when the extra armor and weapons systems were stripped." Ron nodded, but still looked skeptical. "Anything else?" Everyone looked at each other but didnt say anything else. "Okay now in the way of personal wepons we have acess to any UGG weapon of our choice. The armory of the Savior has been stocked with everything from M16s, M24 sniper rifles, demo charges, and heavy weapons. I dont think our biggest problem will be convincing the LFW to joing them but the actual escaping once we have the prisoners onboard." Now Alex paced back and forth as if trying to decide how to break some news to the guys. "Now for this mission we are to be given a new name. Since we have always been the Falcons I didnt take kindly to it, but the UGG insisted. Our new name is now the Firebirds." Alex smiled mischeveously as he lifted his left sleeve. "Which means a new tattoo boys." There on his left arm was a Pheonix holding a sword in its talons. The men cheered with excitement. "Okay men pack your things. We have a mission to complete."

Awesome job. This story keeps getting better and better. I can't wait for the next installment!
Continued form Chapter 1

Three months later the Firebirds found themselves in the spaceport in New Dallas. After taking a short trasport ride from the main gate to the Savior's birth, they slowly stepped out admiring the cruiser. Crews were about prepping the ship. Large trucks, accompanied by large cranes loaded the large sized missles into the tubes of the Mytock Archer Missle system. Garrett was the first to break the silence between the men. "That thing is as manuberable as a fighter? It looks like it could barely outrun a heavy cruiser." Alex chuckled and pated the man on the back, then headed for the ship. The ship itself was fairly large. The command cockpit sat in the front followed by a long narrow neck. Toward the back, Savior got wider and then broke into small stubby wings which housed the engines. After getting into their places in the cockpit the Firebirds began a pre-burn check. Cager sat in the defense chair. "ECM suite operational and on standby. MA missles loaded and on standby." Crack was neck, sitting in the sensor chair. "Sensors operational and at full capacity." Ron chose to stand behind Alex who sat in the command chair. Garrett took his position as the ship's pilot.

Soon a voice came over the speaker. "Savior this is tower Charely. You are clear to launch."Alex gave a quick nod to Garrett. Garrett smiled and fired the fusion engines. The six fusion engines poured out hot, white fire as they pushed to lift the cruiser from the spaceport birth. Soon the Savior was reaching the outer parts of Earth's atmosphere. Garrett pushed the throttle forward, sending Savior forward at blinding speed. "Okay Garrett set a course to jump to Titan III" Savior rocketed forward, her fusion engines being pushed to the limit. Chapter 2

September 14, 2352
Blind jump en route to unknown location

After a couple hours of fighting about the jump and a restless night of sleep things seemed to get back to normal. Alex rested his head on his hand. He glanced over at Crack. "Crack were any of those battlecruisers able to track us?" Crack glanced at his screen and then smiled. "No sir." Then Crack glanced at Cager. Cager also smiled. "Right after the jump I activated over ECM. Even with the hole we ripped into space they cant find us." Alex nodded in approval. "Good job." He then sat up a little straighter. "Alright Carck get ready for a sensor scan. Cager keep the ECM on and prime the missle system. Garrett get prepared to get out of this jump on my mark." The men turned and punded on keyboards as Garrett let his hand rest over the button that would pull them out of the jump. "Mark." Garrett pushed the button and the ship slammed out of its jump. Stars reformed around the ship, but lights began flaring and a shrill alarm went off. "Status report." Crack nervously look in Alex's direction. "Sir we have jumped to close to a planet. Scans dont show which one, but it is a LFW controlled planet."
